No-Mall-vember

Hey hey, welcome back to another blog post, or first.

I've been busy, MultiMall is steadily coming together and I've been expanding my home lab.

Here's the run down on this post;

  • MultiMall update
  • Personal Server

MultiMall

Fortunately I've started a new job. On the down side this means that I've been unable to spend as much time as I would have liked to on MultiMall this month.

But as the festive season starts to ramp up once again and looking at my calendar I'll only be able to get a few hours in here and there. Hopefully I'll have something graphical to show off in the new year.

In the last blog post I mentioned tweaking the GUI design style to look more like I'd wanted it to from the start...

Well I've started working on a 'viewport' element, like those found in Rollercoaster Tycoon and OpenTTD.

This has once again changed the whole nature of the GUI rendering pipeline but it's a feature that I want in my game so I'm going to take the time to implement it.

I've also started cobbling together new glue-code between the simulation (written in D) and the LUA based scripting, in preparation for a new shop entity type.

That's the sum of the MultiMall content in this update.

Personal Server

I could have sworn I mentioned this in the last post but I probably started it straight after I put up the post.

I've had a Raspberry Pi 5 for ages, but due to my previous accommodation wasn't able to fully utilise it as a server like I'd intended when I bought it.

However, now I've moved and set up my home network I thought now was a good time to try some things out.

Just a simple 2TB NAS for backing up all of my super important data, I try my best to follow the 3-2-1 rule for data storage but I'm making do with 2 & 1. a spare 2TB drive is used for snapshots of the main drive (this will eventually become just a single back up after 1TB is used on the main drive but skip over that for now), and a 3rd drive is at my mothers house.

That last point needs expanding, see I live a 2 hour drive away so I don't pop back all the time but when I do I bring down an updated snapshot drive and bring back the one I left previously. Not ideal but at most it's like 2/3 months of data that would be lost an acceptable amount while I'm still building the system.

No this is not a 'production' system, I'm building it out over a year and then I'll create a replica that my family can then access and have the same services.

Services?

I hear you ask. This system isn't just a NAS, by extension it's also a Media Server, it hosts a Gitea instance, a local Docker Registry and CoreDNS.

A nice little system, if I do say so myself.

End

Well that wraps up this one, a little shorter than last time but I haven't got much to update y'all with.

Until next time.
